Managing Director at Democracy Matters

Sandy Killick is a social scientist and entrepreneur, who cares deeply about the integrity and stability of democracy, both in Australia where she lives but also around the world. In 2020 Sandy founded Democracy Matters, a non-partisan organisation dedicated to equipping individuals with the skills and confidence they need to navigate the complexities of modern governance. Sandy educates three groups at the democratic centre – elected representatives, public servants and new voters (young people and new adult citizens).

As Managing Director@Democracy Matters Sandy’s goal is to ensure people are well informed and ethical decision makers. Sandy believes that collective, evidence-based and accountable decision-making is the only way to solve the persistent and large-scale challenges all communities are facing.

Sandy is a qualified teacher with experience at secondary and tertiary levels. She has public policy and research expertise, specialising in gender issues. As a Churchill Fellow, she studied ways of overcoming systemic discrimination against women and children in many European countries. In 2014, Sandy graduated from the Social Leadership Australia adaptive leadership course, equipped with the skills to tackle big systemic challenges. When working with clients, Sandy refers to multiple frameworks including the UK Common Cause working with values program, Lewis Deep Democracy methodology and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Feedback from users of Democracy Matters services is that they feel better equipped to tackle the challenges they care about, more effectively.

Sandy is deeply appreciative of the opportunity to work alongside Dr Alain Metodjo and fellow members of the Africapols advisory group
